Throwback Thursday: Solskjær scores 4 in 20 minutes
There has been a glorious sense of nostalgia around Manchester United at the moment as, not only is one of the club’s favourite sons back at Old Trafford, but they are also playing free-flowing attacking football again, too.
Starved of this kind of swagger during Jose Mourinho’s reign as manager, fans of England’s most successful club are in full voice once more as Ole Gunnar Solskjær has lifted the mood. Scoring 25 goals in 10 games, winning 9 of them and drawing only one, this new-look United are a threat to their opponents’ goal and a threat to the top four of the Premier League once again.
It was 20 years ago when possibly the greatest United side of all time were showcasing the same brand of football that Solskjær is looking to bring back, with the Norwegian a key part of that treble-winning side. Two decades ago this week, United were in the midst of what would become a trophy-laden season, visiting the historic City Ground of Nottingham Forest.
It was looking like another day at the office for Alex Ferguson’s side, as at 4-1 up, he started to rotate the side and take the tempo down. But, coming on with 20 minutes to remain, their now caretaker manager had other ideas.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær entered the field for a runaround, a chance to keep his legs fresh for upcoming fixtures and a chance for his fellow strikers to rest. 20 minutes later he was leaving the match with ball in which it was played, scoring four times. Clinical beyond belief, he smashed home each opportunity he was provided, celebrating with that same smile that saw he dubbed ‘The Babyface Assasin.’
