Throwback: Robin van Persie scores ‘Superman’ header
On this very day in 2014, all eyes were on Brazil as the World Cup group stage served a clash between the two finalists of the tournament prior.
Netherlands, beaten finalists in 2010 by Spain, met their conquerers with 3 points, if not revenge, very much on their mind. It was to be one of the results of the tournament but, at this point, a few minutes before half-time, there was no clue about what madness what about ensue.
An even game was being lead by Spain, with their famous possession game keeping them in control if only by one goal. However, one Dutch counter-attack seemed to change the whole game. The crossfield pass was perfect from Daley Blind, as the then United-bound defender played the pass of the summer. But who was on the end of such a delivery?
Was it a bird? Was it a plane? Nope, it was Robin van Persie.

This moment of magic closed the first-half but gave a warning for what about to happen in the second one. The Oranje counter-attack was too much for Spain to cope with and the world champions were absolutely humbled by five goals to one. RVP netted once more, whilst two strikes from Arjen Robben have gone down into Dutch football folklore, too – and you can’t forget about Stefan de Vrij!
An iconic World Cup moment and one many spectacular goals in the career of Robin van Persie.
