Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s new football project in Colombia: La Equidad

Over the last few years, Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have left their mark on football. After acquiring Wrexham AFC in 2021 and creating a popular documentary series around the club from Wales, the pair is now involved in a takeover of La Equidad, a football club from Colombia.

On the 15th of January, the U.S. consortium of real estate investor Al Tylis and sports owner and executive Sam Porter, backed by investors including Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, Eva Longoria, and former footballer Mesut Özil, completed the takeover of La Equidad. According to sources familiar with the deal, the consortium has acquired a 99% stake in the club that competes in Colombia’s top flight.

Third football club

It is already the third football club Reynolds and McElhenney will get involved with. The actors first acquired Wrexham AFC in 2021, when the club was still playing in the fifth tier of English football. Since then the club has been promoted twice and is currently competing for promotion to the Championship.

In April 2024, Reynolds and McElhenney also acquired a minority stake in the Mexican football club Necaxa, which was already owned by the Tylis-Porter group. In return, the consortium was given a stake in Wrexham AFC. Since then, a documentary series about Necaxa, Bienvenido a Nexaca (Welcome to Nexaca), has already been filmed. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are among the executive producers and on-air stars of the series.

Welcome to La Equidad

It remains to be seen whether the Colombian football club La Equidad will also create a documentary series after the takeover. Club Deportivo La Equidad, which is based in Colombia’s capital Bogotá, has never won the first division in its 42 years of existence but has finished runners-up on three occasions.
