La Liga reimagined: Ranking Spanish teams by highest average attendance

Spanish football has plenty of sleeping giants. Think of Deportivo de la Coruña, Real Zaragoza, or Málaga CF. Additionally, there are also some stadiums with a capacity of over 20,000 in the lower tiers of Spanish football, such as the grounds of Hércules Alicante, Córdoba CF, and Recreativo de Huelva. It made us wonder: What if La Liga consisted of the 20 teams with the highest average attendance? Would the league look that much different?

La Liga Attendance

Relegated teams

Well, it turns out that none of the football clubs in the third tier of Spanish football would compete in the top flight. Real Murcia (12,536), Hércules (9,940) and Recreativo Huelva (6,500) are all missing out, although Real Murcia has a higher average attendance than three current La Liga clubs.

The five clubs which would be relegated to the second tier, if we were only to look at the average attendance so far in the 2024/25 season, would be Deportivo Alavés (17,406), Rayo Vallecano (17,406), Girona (12,455), CD Leganés (10,788), and Getafe CF (10,483). Playing in the UEFA Champions League doesn’t make a difference for Girona FC, which became part of the City Football Group in 2017.

Villarreal (18,770) narrowly avoids the drop, despite being an established club that regularly plays European football.

Promoted teams

With five teams facing the drop, five new teams would be making their way into La Liga. Málaga CF (25,178), the club that reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2012, even makes the top 10 of average attendance records this season. The other four clubs that would be promoted to La Liga are Deportivo de la Coruña (23,257), Sporting Gijón (21,347), Racing Santander (19,324), and Real Oviedo (19,143). Real Zaragoza (18,397) just misses out on promotion.

The three clubs with the highest average attendance are Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, and Real Betis, although it must be stated that FC Barcelona usually would be in the top three if they were playing in Camp Nou.

  1. Real Madrid (72,988)
