Who were the previous winners of Life After Football’s Fashion Player Awards?

You can now vote for who you believe deserves to win the Fashion Player Awards 2024. This year, either Quilindschy Hartman (Feyenoord), Tommy St. Jago (Willem II), Isaac Babadi (PSV Eindhoven), Mario Engels (Heracles Almelo) or Sterre Kroezen (PEC Zwolle Women) will go home with the biggest and most prestigious fashion award in football. Over the last few years, we’ve already had some incredible winners.

Fashion Player winners

Eloy Room (2023)

The winner of 2023 was Eloy Room, the 35-year-old goalkeeper who’s played for clubs such as PSV Eindhoven, Vitesse, and Columbus Crew beat players such as Ismael Saibari and Ricky van Wolfswinkel to the award. “I quite like something different, a slightly more relaxed style. It’s important to me that my clothes feel comfortable. I really like oversized clothing, and colours matter to me as well. I always check what’s on the agenda when choosing my outfit, but I often go for a comfy fit. I just make sure my clothes suit the occasion.”

Devyne Rensch (2022)

A year earlier, Ajax’s Devyne Rensch went home with the award. The Ajax defender often went shopping with his close friends Ryan Gravenberch and Jurriën Timber and undoubtedly took style advice from the latter. “If you look at my Instagram, you can see that I have a certain vibe. Someone who pays attention to how he dresses. I think my style looks quite good in photos.”

Jurriën Timber (2021)

Jurriën Timber was only twenty years old when he received the award for the best-dressed Eredivisie player of 2021 at Hotel L’Europe in the heart of Amsterdam. The talented defender, who now plays for Arsenal, excels at pairing basics with designer clothing. He describes his own style as simple but elevated by details. ‘’I want to come across as casual in a positive way and show that I put thought into my clothing.”

Reza Goochannejhad (2020)

Reza Ghoochannejhad was named Life After Football Fashion Player in 2020. Dutch football fans had long known that the man had class. During the campaign, the Iranian striker once again demonstrated that he is a true classic gentleman, earning over 40% of the votes! In his interview, he described his style as classic and timeless. ‘’I really love classic items. A double-breasted jacket, for example, or a nice two-button blazer, a stylish pair of trousers, or a good trench coat. I’m really anti-trends and won’t be quick to wear anything too flashy.”

Navarone Foor (2019)

In 2019, Navarone Foor was voted Fashion Player of the Year by the readers of Life After Football. The stylish former player of clubs like Vitesse received strong support from his teammates throughout the campaign. Navarone ultimately beat football professionals such as André Onana and Shanice van de Sanden, who became the first woman to be nominated for the prestigious award. Food’s passion for fashion also goes a bit further than most footballers: “Having my own clothing line one day would be wonderful.”

Dusan Tadic (2018)

Dušan Tadić, who had just recently returned to the Eredivisie, was honoured with the Fashion Player Award in 2018. The Serbian exceeded all expectations in his first season at Ajax and came close to realising his boldest European dreams. In this successful year, Dušan also made a significant impression off the pitch, earning him a fashion award to add to his accolades. “Fashion is certainly not a hobby of mine, but a style just develops naturally. It’s as if, when I dress well, I automatically feel good as well.”

Jeremain Lens (2017)

In 2017, Jeremain Lens had the honour of being crowned the best-dressed footballer. The footballer flew in from Istanbul, where he was under contract with Besiktas at the time, to accept the rotating trophy. From the very beginning, Jeremain was confident he would win, and he impressed voters with his urban sporty style.

Warner Hahn (2016)

In 2016, Warner Hahn became the first goalkeeper to be named Fashion Player of the Year. The Rotterdam-born player with Surinamese roots impressed voters with his love for sneakers, which he managed to pull off even with a smart outfit. In a fierce competition for the prestigious award, Warner beat style icons Jürgen Locadia, Jetro Willems, John Heitinga, and Alireza Jahanbakhsh.

Eljero Elia (2015)

The most fashionable footballer of 2015 was none other than Eljero Elia. The former youth talent shone with the Dutch national team in South Africa in 2010. After the World Cup, the streets of the Netherlands were dominated by mohawks and streetwear, inspired by Eljero Elia. It’s no surprise, then, that Eljero went on to win the Fashion Player Award a few years later.

Nigel de Jong (2014)

In 2014, Nigel de Jong became the first footballer to receive the Fashion Player Award. The former midfielder, who’s now the technical director of the Dutch Football Association, was the favourite among the readers, fans, and followers of Life After Football, from a shortlist of eleven nominees. Even after his active football career, Nigel continues to impress with his imposing presence and stylish look.
